If your Santa Clarita home has a swimming pool that’s 20 years or older, it may be time for you to protect your investment with a pool replaster or remodel. Many pools this age are made of gunite, which is a mixture of cement, sand, and water, that was sprayed over a web of reinforced bars and then topped with plaster.
Unfortunately, even with good pool chemistry and care, the expected life span of pools that were plastered this way is about 15 years or so. This means that if you haven’t had your pool replastered yet, you could be sitting on a pool at the end of its useful service life. As such, continuing to let maintenance slide could end up costing you a lot more money in repairs.
Telltale Signs That It’s Time to Replaster
Sometimes the signs that it’s time to replaster are obvious. For example, if you notice plaster is peeling or flaking along the steps of your pool or spa, you’re headed for a problem. Known as spalling, caused by low PH or low calcium levels.
Surface stains are another visible sign. They are caused by copper, calcium, and salt and can discolor a pool, turning it into a blotchy blue-gray hue. Some people may be able to acid wash a pool to remove the stains, but when these stains are severe, the only way to remove them is with a replaster.
Finally, because you live in earthquake country, small temblors or the settling of soil can cause structural cracks over time, that, if left untreated, will lead leaks that could not only force a replaster but the need to rebuild parts of the pool as well.
